"Just A Day, Just An Ordinary Day"
by Jess Hoffman

So, I'm in a good mood.
You may wonder why.   Or you may not, but if you keep reading, then I assume that you do wonder.
  So, I'll tell you.

Today was a normal Wednesday. Nothing spectacular, nothing dull. Woke up, went to breakfast, checked in at the office, then went on to take some pictures of sports. I enjoyed seeing everyone have a good time as always. Then while passing by Teniball, the Freshman and Sophomores didn't have too many people signed up, so they needed another person to bat, because everyone else was on base. The counselor, Ben, called over and said, "Hey Jess, do you want to hit once?!" At first I was hesitant, thinking I should just keep taking pictures, but then I realized I'd have more time throughout the day to do so. I then grabbed the tennis racket, hit, played through the inning, and then went on my way. Now that made me happy. And no, it wasn't because I hit a triple while playing against people about half my age; it was because I realized how much I love the activities here at Campus Kids. Now I'm going to delve deeper into my day, not because I'm narcissistic, but because I promise, there's a meaning for all of it.
I then went on to take pictures of Gladiator. I decided, hey, I really miss playing Gladiator as well. That was one of my favorite activities as a camper, so why not play it and see if I still am fairly good at it. Well, I got out both rounds, but I'd say I put up a good fight! Regardless, what's cool is the exhileration when grabbing someone's flag off, or the adrenaline when darting to get the flag. This made me realize how much I love the random spurts of excitement that we all get here, just from the little things! Whether it's winning first place from an evening activity, or your favorite ice cream at lunch, it's cool that it can just make the moments here that much better!
Then as the day went on, I went to the gym and after took pictures of Basketball. The reason I'm talking about these two together is because while at those two places, I was able to have really great conversations with fellow Staff- Kim and Danny. As we were doing activities such as using the eliptical and shooting hoops, we talked about our lives, stories, and different experiences both in and outside of camp. Now this made me think of another reason I love camp (Can you tell that I'm a fan of Campus Kids?)- the connections with people here.  Now I'm sure I can tell you over and over about how great the people are here, but once you experience it, it's just kind of indescribable. It's the atmosphere here, that lends itself to everyone being so open. The counselors and campers are so diverse, and getting to know everyone, finding similarities, and differences can be so interesting! But the best way to sum it up, is you can just be yourself. (I'm sorry that this is fairly long..hope you're still reading!)
Lastly, what I did most recently was venture out to the golf course. It was double period golf! I took some pictures, and a counselor, Kiran offered me to take a shot from the bunker. I honestly never thought I'd be playing golf (at least before the age of 40), and didn't really know what the bunker was, but I thought I'd give it a shot. (no pun intended...I had to) So Kiran and all the other campers that were golfing, helped me out, and boom, I hit it! I mean it didn't go close to the hole, but at least there was contact! So that's another thing I think is cool about camp- the new experiences. There is not only the availability to try new things because of all the activities, but also the encouragement and help from the counselors and campers.
So that was my day. (I hope you weren't expecting me to say that I went cliff-diving or met a celebrity.)
It reminded me of some aspects of camp I love- the activities, the excitement, the people, and the new experiences. They all kind of happen because of each other. For example- the activities wouldn't be as great without the people. Or the excitement can come from a new activity.
It's interesting that by putting down the camera for a little bit, it let me reflect on the bigger picture.
